In our previous guide on “Retaining Skilled Testers in Test Positions”, we highlighted the importance of acknowledging the excellent job done by the testers.
“Compliment Testers for discovering high calibre Bugs. Arrange weekly or monthly rivalries like ‘Bug of the Week’ to appreciate them. This fosters the development of a successful QA team.”

Eric Jacobson, a Software Tester, applies this same principle to keep his testing team motivated. Eric came up with an innovative reward approach, namely, conducting a Bug contest. He chose to confer the ‘Mercury’ cap to the tester who logged the maximum bugs during a designated week. Visit this Link to See the Winner of this Competition.
One slight adjustment we’d propose to make this strategy more effective is to recognise the testers who identify the Quality Bug, possibly termed as ‘Bug of the Week’. Then, the primary concern of software testers becomes quality bugs, rather than sheer numbers. Of course, small UI bugs shouldn’t be overlooked either.
I am an advocate of applauding testers for their commendable efforts. It could be expressing appreciation in any form. Whether it’s a minor gift or simply kind, encouraging words from the team lead or manager, these gestures keep the testers’ zeal to unearth new and higher quality bugs alive.
If you’re a Team Leader, Manager, or even a teammate, what do you believe is the most effective way to sustain enthusiasm among Software Testers?
