Every job description or vacancy has a list of mandatory skills, as well as valuable but nonessential ones. The breadth of skills can be overwhelming and, even though we strive to be proficient in everything, it can be challenging to ascertain if we match a specific job role. Today, we will engage in a “Skill matching” exercise.
We will compile a correlation of job roles and the skills appropriate for each.
A word of caution, however, please don’t rely solely on this list. Bear in mind that it’s a general guideline intended for a broad audience.
At STH, we always follow this guiding principle: “It’s rare for a candidate to satisfy 100% of a job’s requirements. Therefore, we suggest applying if you meet 75-85% of them.”
This principle applies even if you don’t have the stipulated years of experience. If you have knowledge of ALM, SQL, and QA concepts necessary for the job but lack the requisite experience, go ahead and apply.
The focus should be on showcasing your skills and abilities, not the number of years of experience you have. You might question: “Does this tactic actually deliver results?” It is a proven strategy. We espouse the same approach in our STH’s QA course. A number of our graduates are now gainfully employed in various positions. So, yes, it does indeed work.
Now, let’s return to the primary theme:
Below is a rundown of “Skills – QA jobs” to help you ascertain which capabilities you already possess and which you need to hone to qualify for common QA roles:
Disclaimer: We mentioned HP ALM (for test management), HP QTP/UFT (functional testing), SOAPUI (web service testing), HP LoadRunner (performance testing) among tools you should be familiar with. Still, you can leverage equivalent tools if you wish.

This list is intended to be general guidance. Beyond these skills, remember that having a positive mindset, effective communication skills, a solid work ethic, and staying current with the latest trends in your field are integral to any successful career in QA.
